Host of The Breeze Tauranga weekdays, Jolene James answers 4 questions in 4 minutes for Grandparents NZ.
You are also a funeral celebrant, what was your motivation for this?
I lost my Mum in 2016 and delivered the eulogy at her funeral. Despite that being a very sad occasion, I really enjoyed being able to do that for her. A year later my Uncle passed and I offered to be the celebrant for his service. I began to realise how much of a privilege it was to help families farewell their loved ones and the combination of skills I’ve developed over the years lend themselves well to the role. Having lost close relatives myself in recent years, that helps me to understand and support others through the processes. I very much enjoy meeting with families, finding out more about the person they’ve lost then compiling and presenting a fitting tribute to them.
Who do you admire and why?
Actress Joanna Lumley. I’ve loved watching her in many acting roles over the years and recently started watching her travel documentaries where she explores places like India, Africa and Japan. I love her style, dignity and compassion for others along with a childlike wonderment at the world around us.
Where would you like to go to on your next holiday?
It’s a tie between Vietnam, India and Europe.
What do you like to do with your time outside of work?
I love exploring the countryside and road tripping down backroads. I get to the movies regularly and go op shopping probably far too much! I’m trying to get to yoga classes and keep on top of the weeds in my garden.
