The technical developers at Google like to have a bit of fun and add what has become commonly referred to as an ‘Easter egg’. An Easter egg is a hidden item or joke within a TV series, movie or piece of digital technology. In this case, it is within Google.
There are conflicting reports on how the term was coined. One is that video game developer Atari’s game Adventure provided the player with hidden messages to find other messages resulting in a hunt. The second originates from the 1975 cult classic The Rocky Horror Show where the cast had an Easter egg hunt. The majority of the eggs were not found making Easter eggs visible throughout the movie.
