Many people are considering the environmental impact purchases make and this can be as simple as a packet of crackers or crisp bread. Many crackers are in a plastic tray used so they don’t break, then sealed in plastic so they don’t go stale before being displayed in a cardboard box. That is 3 layers of packaging.
So why not try our recipe and make your own delicious crackers or crisp bread at home – these are easy, delicious and are sure to impress your family and friends. And the best bit, there is a high chance you have all of the ingredients in your cupboard already.
1.5 cups flour
2 teaspoons herbs
1 tsp ground black pepper
1 tsp salt
1 tsp sugar
2 tablespoons of olive oil
½ Cup cold water
Baking paper (or try with flour on a non stick baking tray if you have one)
Preheat oven to 230 degrees.
Put the flour, herbs, pepper, salt, sugar and olive oil in a food processer and pulse.
Once combined add water and pulse again until a dough forms and begins to stick together – this is fairly quick, around 10-15 seconds
Press the dough together to form a ball and cut in to 4 pieces and let rest for 10 mins
Roll each ball out as thin as you can. You want this to be very, very thin (we can’t express that enough). Then transfer to baking paper on a baking tray.
Bake for 4-5 mins but keep an eye on it as they can burn quickly. Flip over and bake for another 4-5 mins
Turn the oven off and let crisp bread sit for a couple of hours longer – this allows the crisp bread to really dry out and become very crisp.
Break in to pieces and serve with your favourite cheese and dip. Try our hummus dip
These can be tough so make sure you roll them very thin, even if the dough splits a little, this is okay.
Press sesame seeds in to the mix if you’d like to add these
Try any herbs you like, mix and match. We used thyme but we also think extra cracked pepper, sesame and paprika could be delicious
If there are any left, store in a dark dry place and airtight container
Double the mix if you’d like more or are sharing
