Larnach Castle, situated on the Otago Peninsula is one of Dunedin’s popular tourist attractions. The castle has fascinating recent and older history. Beginning construction in 1871, the castle was left to decay before being purchased by Barry and Margaret Baker in the late 1960s.
The Bakers and their dedicated team spent many hours, days, weeks and years restoring and adding to the castle to make it the grand jewel it is today. The gardens are one of 5 in New Zealand that have been given the title of “Garden of International Significance” and for good reason. The vast gardens are a joy to walk around and the interior a quirky view.
Stop afterwards for some tea in the ballroom by the fire and a jaunt through the gift shop. If you’re heading to Dunedin, Larnach Castle is an absolute must do, especially on a clear day. We went in the middle of winter – we can only imagine how beautiful the grounds are in summer.
