We all know the days of the week but probably not where the names come from.
For many languages, the days of the week are derived from the names of the seven classical planets.
Moon = Monday
Mars = Tuesday
Mercury = Wednesday
Jupiter = Thursday
Venus = Friday
Saturn = Saturday
Sun = Sunday
In terms of Sunday or Monday being considered the first day of the week, the International Standard is that Monday is the first day of the week.
The 7 day week spread across the Roman Empire and it was widely used throughout the Roman Empire and India and China by the 4th Century.
